CIFFI PEN PROJECTS

Berryessa Pens | Lewiston/Trinity Pens | Lake Collins Pens | Twin Lakes Pens

 Berryessa Pen Project

Thursday, January 7, 2010 –

Department of Fish and Game arrived at Markley Cove, Lake Berryessa with 1,000 pounds of rainbow trout.  The fish were carefully netted and approximately 250 went into each of the four pens.

DFG personnel directing were: Mike Harris, George Kneeland, Phil Moeller and Adam Meyer.
CIFFI members/family were:  Sunny and Kyle Lampe, Larry Goodell, Mary Helmer, Dallas & Judy Freeman and granddaughter Meigan Rains, Ron DeRosa, John Eagleton, Dennis Harvel and Jim Thompson.

The fish will be monitored and fed until early Spring…when they will be released into Lake Berryessa for the pleasure of trout anglers.  CIFFI provides the fish food and volunteers to maintain this project.

The Berryessa Pen Project began in 1999 and has successfully raised and released rainbow trout each year since.

Markley Cove, Lake Berryessa

California Inland Fisheries Foundation volunteers met at the CIFFI Pen Project location at Lake Berryessa early in the morning.  The event? To release the rainbow trout that spent several months growing in the Pens.  Armed with nets and fish food, the volunteers and DFG personnel began to systematically net fish for evaluation.  Mike Harris and Phil Moeller of DFG, measured and weighed samples, collecting data that will help them determine growth rates.  They handled 46 fish, ranging in weight from 1-3/4 to 3-3/4 pounds, providing statistics that will assist in all future pen projects.  The fish all looked very good, had no disfigurements and should provide great opportunities for anglers to enjoy catching trout at the lake.

Dallas Freeman, developer of the new-age pens at Berryessa, was on hand, making sure the doors opened correctly, which they did.  The fish weren’t very cooperative…when anything changes around their pens, they head for the safety of the bottom.  Volunteers, Kevin Yost of Lucky Strike Fishing and Markley Cove employees, had to “fish” deep with the nets to catch them.  Sep and Marilyn Hendrickson and CIFFI member Ray Erck provided support.

The pens worked perfectly and volunteers will show up soon to power-wash them in preparation for the next delivery of fish, sometime in late Fall.  This year’s project is considered a total success.  DFG is pleased with the amount of fish they were able to evaluate, Markley Cove is happy they are there to support the project, and CIFFI can be proud of their efforts.

On Thursday December 11, 2008, the final two pens were delivered to Markley Cove at Lake Berryessa.  Thanks to volunteers Sunny Lampe, Dallas Freeman, Larry Goodell, Don Nevis, Troy Barr and Jason Tidwell (JT) all went well.  The four pens are now in position, waiting for a “move-in” date to be established by Markley Cove.  A major group of volunteers will get the pens to the pen area at the end of the docks then put them into the water.  When ready, DFG will fill them with trout.  Watch for more updates!

More Photos of Lake Berryessa Pen Replacement and Fish Plant 1/5/09

On Tuesday, November 25th, volunteers brought two new, state-of-the-art fish pens to Markley Cove, Lake Berryessa.  Sunny Lampe and his son, Kyle, carefully maneouvered the two pens down the freeway from Sacramento on a flatbed trailer behind their truck.  Sunny mentioned it was a bit stressful at times – these are big pens, destined for placement into the CIFFI pen project at the Lake.

The pens were designed and built by Dallas Freeman, contractor, who donates a lot of time and effort to CIFFI.  His partner in the construction is Kyle Haynes, Sunny’s son.  The pens are a new design and are strong, solid and very versatile, with entry doors on one side- a great improvement over our past pen structures.  Markley Cove’s forklift assisted in taking the pens off the flatbed and Dallas kept a close eye on his project.

Within the next few weeks, the other two pens will be completed and once again, delivered to Markley Cove.  Once the four pens are at Markley, Sunny will arrange for a compatible date, and an army of volunteers will move the pens onto a barge and subsequently over to the pen area where they will be placed into position.  This will be coordinated with Dept. of Fish and Game who will then provide trout to be placed into the pens.  Here, they will grow to larger sizes, prior to release in late spring of 2009.

A very rewarding experience – and thanks to Sunny, Kyle, Dallas and Troy Barr and JT Tidwell for a job well done.  And thanks to the membership who continues to support our efforts – we are making a difference!  Here’s to good fishing at Lake Berryessa!

 Lewiston/Trinity Pen Project

Dec 11, 2009 -  2,250  half pound fish were put into Cedar Stock Marina- Trinity Lake fish pens.  Pens have been rebuilt and are in great shape. Looking forward to a wonderful fishing season this spring.

December 11, 2008 - According to Joe Sustak, US Forest Service and Randy Bentine, DFG Region 1 Senior Biologist, repairs to the pens is nearing completion.  To date CIFFI has provided lumber, fittings, hardware, wire mesh and hog rings, totalling $3,275.56. In addition, food in the amount of $2,079.20 is on hand, waiting for trout to arrive.  This is an important pen project for CIFFI in the Lewiston area and we will definitely provide current information as it becomes available.

 Collins Pen Project

Lake Collins Pens Photos

On November 11, 2009, the Dept. of Fish and Game filled the pens at Collins Lake. Each pen received 400, half pound fish and will remain in the pens for approximately 5 months. When released, they will be around 3 to 3 1/2 pounds each. The release is planned to take place just prior to CIFFI's Collins Lake Derby so it should be some fantastic fishing for the derby and thoughout the year at Collins.

Update to Collins Lake…December 15, 2008

For a short time, Collins Lake was on the list of “do not plant” lakes!  However, Lincoln Young got going and the rest is history.  Read on:

By Lincoln Young, Dec. 8, 2008
Good News!!!  We have successfully documented that the surface area of Collins Lake is 1008.8 acres and therefore should come off of the "do not plant" list from DFG.  We filed an appeal to DFG Wednesday, Dec. 3rd, along with our documentation and their response on Friday, Dec. 5th, was that they agree with us and believe they have made an error that should be corrected.  Collins Lake should come off of the "do not plant" list and everything should return to normal for 2009.

The only issue left is one of timing.  DFG has submitted their list to the judge and to the environmental groups that have sued them.  They need to submit a revised list with this correction.  There seems to be a couple of other minor corrections in the works as well for other bodies of water.  DFG doesn't want to dribble them in one at a time to the judge, so they are getting all of their ducks in a row for one submittal.  Collins Lake will be on that submittal.  That should be fairly quick.  The only other timing issue is since the lawyers are some law students from Stanford, they are about to head into their semester finals and then Christmas break... so if it doesn't happen next week, it won't likely happen until January. Hopefully it will happen sooner so we can plant the net pens in December instead of January.

From Lincoln Young, Dec. 14, 2008
Since DFG is back on track to plant Collins Lake, the food that was delivered to Nimbus Hatchery as been picked up.  All of the pens have been cleaned and moved into place at the marina and are ready to receive the trout.  We had only one that needed repairs to the floatation... and the repairs were done today.  That last one just needs to be re-launched and brought to the marina, but that won't take too long.  As soon as weather permits and when DFG is ready, we can have the trout delivered.  Thanks again for all of your hard work and support.

For 2009, Collins Lake is on track and CIFFI is happy to be a part of this very successful program.  Our Derby (on April 18th) will go on as planned!

 Twin Lakes Pen Project

During the recent 2008 Bridgeport Trout Tournament to raise funds for the Twin Lakes/Bridgport Pen Project, the organizer, Paul Madsen, reported that each junior participant received a rod/reel combo, a medal, and a certificate of participation.  A lot of smiles.  Thanks again for CIFF's help.
